St. Hugh's High School Alumnae Association Canada

PROJECTS

St. Hugh’s High School for Girls is dedicated to “educating the whole child”—a commitment that encompasses academic excellence, personal growth, and active citizenship. To sustain this mission and support the development of our students, we fund a variety of projects and initiatives, in alignment with the strategic direction of the school’s leadership.

2024 / 2025 Projects

Revitalizing the Netball, Volleyball and Basketball Courts

To help ensure the continued success of the netball, volleyball and basketball sport programs, it has become essential to renovate and revitalize the facilities, as they are crucial for maintaining our top-tier teams, by providing safe and accessible spaces for training and competitions.

We have embraced this initiative and adopted it as our primary focus for 2024/2025.

The Importance of Sports in Education

Sports play a vital role in the holistic development of students. They contribute significantly to physical, mental, and social well-being, preparing students for future success in various aspects of life. The balance created by participating in sports enhances not only the individual student but also the entire school community and society as a whole.

Jamaica’s prominence in the global sports arena is a testament to the exceptional talent and achievements of our athletes. St. Hugh’s High School for Girls has a proud tradition of nurturing students who excel both academically and athletically, contributing positively to Jamaica and the world.

Previous Projects

September 2022 Cafeteria Update

During the Spring meeting of the Global Alumnae Associations, Principal Mrs. Andrea Bryan-Hughes emphasized the cafeteria refurbishing project as her top priority for 2022. With the resident concessionaires scheduled to vacate at the end of the school year in June and take their equipment with them, the school faced a tight three-month deadline to raise funds for new equipment and perform a general facelift, including painting and other cosmetic updates.

Thanks to the tremendous success of our Fish Fry fundraiser, our Chapter was able to contribute CAD $3,000 toward the cafeteria project. Combined with donations from other chapters around the world, we successfully met our target. The cafeteria was refurbished and reopened in September, ready to serve meals to students and staff. This revitalized space not only enhances our daily dining experience but also generates income to support additional school initiatives.

COVID Assistance

To assist the return to in-person learning, in 2021 we donated ten (10) Sanitizing Stations and three (3) Hand Washing Stations.
These items were critical to the successful reopening of the school once the vaccinated student population reached the required level.

Remote Access

Life changed to remote living as result of COVID.
Students required devices to connect for learning.  Below is Principal Mrs. Andrea Bryan-Hughes accepting delivery of 8 iPADS and keyboards in November 2022.

FUNDRAISING

To achieve the goal of revitalizing these facilities, the Alumnae set a 2024/2025 fundraising target of CAD $40,000.
