On Saturday, August 10, 2024, we enjoyed a beautiful morning for our annual Walkathon at Saigon Park in Mississauga. The weather was perfect as 10 dedicated participants gathered for our customary 5 km walk around the track, starting promptly at 9 am.
This year, we embraced the spirit of our community by donning our vibrant Swantastic T-shirts. The energy and enthusiasm were palpable as we walked together, showcasing our pride in St. Hugh’s High School.
Following the walk, we gathered for a delightful brunch, marking a fitting end to a morning filled with fun and fellowship. The event was not just a chance to stay active but also an opportunity to connect with fellow alumnae and celebrate our shared commitment to supporting St. Hugh’s.
Thank you to everyone who participated and contributed to the success of this event.
We were blessed with light showers of rain as we started our 5 km walk at Saigon Park in Mississauga. As the rain fell, we saw a variety of raincoats—both store-bought and homemade—making their debut. Thankfully, the rain was short-lived, and we were soon able to enjoy a beautiful walk amidst the refreshed park scenery.
The walk was highlighted by wonderful fellowship and the spirit of community. To cap off the event, we had an exhilarating dance party, led by none other than Auleen. It was a fantastic way to celebrate our morning of activity and connection.
The morning began with a refreshing stretching session, setting the stage for a delightful day ahead. We then enjoyed a leisurely 5-lap walk around Saigon Park in Mississauga, soaking in the beautiful surroundings and each other’s company.
To our surprise and delight, the walk concluded with an energetic dancing session. It was amazing to see how our spirits remained high, allowing us to dance with enthusiasm despite the earlier exercise.
The event was a perfect blend of fun, fellowship, and camaraderie—exactly what we needed after the isolation of Covid. It was wonderful to reconnect and share these joyful moments together. Thank you to everyone who participated and made the morning so memorable!
Our 5 km walk began with masks, a necessary precaution during the early stages of our event. However, as we got moving and enjoyed the fresh outdoor air, we found it challenging to walk comfortably while masked. After considering the situation and ensuring we could maintain proper distancing, we decided to remove the masks, making our walk much more enjoyable.
Despite the need for isolation while walking, the morning was filled with great times and wonderful camaraderie. We embraced the opportunity to reconnect and have fun, making the event a memorable experience for all involved. Surprise, surprise, a bee follow one of our members for most if not all of the walk. Honey maybe?
Thank you to everyone who participated and contributed to the success of our walkathon!
In 2021, amidst the challenges of the Covid-19 pandemic, the Alumnae faced a unique fundraising challenge. With in-person gatherings and events restricted, we needed an innovative solution to continue our support for the school while ensuring the safety and well-being of our community.
Our team adapted swiftly by organizing a delivered Fish Fry meal that proved to be a resounding success. Embracing the constraints of the pandemic, we implemented stringent safety measures. Our team, equipped with hand sanitizer and masks, carried out contactless deliveries of meals to our supporters. Each meal was carefully packaged in bags adorned with the school’s blue and gold colors, adding a touch of St. Hugh’s spirit to every delivery.
The Fish Fry meals were delivered across a wide area, stretching from Oshawa in the east to Kitchener/Hamilton in the west. This extensive reach allowed us to engage with our alumnae and supporters across the region, ensuring that everyone had the opportunity to contribute to our cause while enjoying a delicious meal.
The success of the Fish Fry was a testament to the strength and resilience of our community. Despite the challenges posed by the pandemic, our dedicated volunteers and generous supporters came together to make this event a success. The funds raised through this initiative played a crucial role in supporting our projects and continuing our mission to assist St. Hugh’s High School.
We are grateful for the unwavering support and enthusiasm of our alumnae and friends, which made the Fish Fry 2021 a memorable and impactful event. Thank you for your continued commitment to our cause and for helping us navigate the challenges of the pandemic with creativity and solidarity.
The AJAA Graduates Program, initiated by the Alliance of Jamaican Alumni Association (AJAA) in 1993, is dedicated to celebrating and supporting high school graduates of Jamaican descent. Held annually in July, the Graduates Awards reception honors students’ academic achievements and provides bursaries to assist with their post-secondary education. This program not only acknowledges their hard work but also alleviates some of the financial pressures associated with further education.
In 2024, Mikayla Stoddart, a graduate of Victoria Park Collegiate Institute, was honored with the bursary. Mikayla is recognized for her exceptional work ethic, academic excellence, and outstanding leadership in promoting cultural awareness, diversity, and inclusion. Her commitment to giving back and making a positive impact in her community has been remarkable. Mikayla has been accepted into the University of Toronto’s Co-op Arts and Social Studies Program. At the Graduates Awards dinner, President Paulette Tenn and Vice President Maraye Bonner had the pleasure of celebrating her achievements with a photo opportunity.
Kezia Harley, a graduate of Pine Ridge Secondary School in Pickering, Ontario, was the 2023 bursary recipient. Known for her unwavering commitment to academic excellence and a profound passion for the arts—especially fashion—Kezia aspires to create a clothing line that celebrates inclusivity, focusing particularly on plus-sized individuals. She is currently pursuing an Advanced Diploma in Fashion Arts at Seneca College. Although Kezia was unable to attend the Graduates Awards banquet, PR Chairman Tamieka Bailey presented the bursary to her father on her behalf.
